Letter From the President

To My Fellow Xavierites,

It is a truly an honor and privilege to serve you as the Student Government Association President for the 2009-2010 academic year. This is sure to be an exhilarating year at our university, and I hope each of you thoroughly enjoys it.  As you begin this year with the goal of continuing your education, I emphatically wish all of you a successful year!

Change is often an idea, which is taken for granted.  The process of attaining any sort of change is usually not easily achieved.  However, with the election of the first African-American president of the United States, Barack Obama, the idea of change is actually becoming more appreciated and sought after.  President Obama said himself that “change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time.” Therefore, I believe that now, more than any other moment at our university, we, the student body, must take heed to President Obama’s statement and challenge everything in which we believe.

Keeping in mind the theme for this year, “The Future is Ours: Be the Change You Wish to See,” it is the goal of your elected officers to first start making the necessary changes within SGA so we can serve you in a more efficient and more professional manner. In addition, through creative and new programming ideas, we intend to get and to keep you excited about SGA and establish a strong legacy upon which other executive boards can improve. I encourage all of you to stop waiting for change to come!  Instead, be the change you wish to see. I look forward to having a wonderful year with you!

Shaurita D. Hutchins
SGA President 2009-2010

What is SGA?

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the official representative of students in University policy-making and administration. It is the party responsible for providing open forums for student issues and concerns; improving student life and providing leadership experience.

SGA is the liaison between the students, faculty and University administration, providing appointments to a variety of internal and University committees, task forces and boards that establish or influence a wide range of policies, procedures and the general direction of academic and nonacademic programs and services offered at Xavier.

All full-time and part-time undergraduate and professional school students are members of the Student Government Association.
