Students who initially do not declare a major on admittance to Xavier and current students who are in the process of choosing a different major are classified as Deciding majors and are advised through the Office of Academic Enhancement (OAE).  The Office of Academic Enhancement has developed a system of academic advising and mentoring for deciding majors that includes advising by faculty and OAE staff with the following objectives:

• To maintain and improve a system for advising students on academic courses
• To develop a process for students to choose an appropriate major
• To assist students with career assessment and future planning
• To help students achieve academic success
• To expose students to majors and academic disciplines at Xavier
• To aid students in the process for declaring a major

To achieve these objectives, the following goals have been developed:

• Have faculty and OAE staff actively involved in the academic advising of Deciding Majors
• Have all Deciding students utilize advisor cards and received weekly academic monitoring
• Have all Deciding students aware of campus academic support and encourage their use of these facilities
• Have all Deciding students aware of majors and disciplines offered on campus to facilitate choosing a major
• Have all Deciding students complete the Strong Interest Inventory or other assessment tool for creating a profile and assisting in career assessment

Students are provided individual counseling in choosing a major and receive exposure to the career options that such majors offer. Advisors include faculty, the Dean of Freshman Studies, and the Assistant Dean of Freshman Studies.  Deciding majors are responsible for attending departmental meetings where they receive information on academic disciplines and academic departments/divisions on campus.  Students meet weekly with an academic advisor to discuss their academic progress, determine if there are impediments for the students with their grades, and receive advice for academic improvement.  All students meet with the Director of Academic Support to discuss academic support options and strategies for college success.
