H1N1 Campus Flu Update #8
Flu season is upon us and we can expect a resurgence of both seasonal and H1N1 flu cases in the coming months. Members of the Xavier community are encouraged to continue rigorous hygiene practices including washing and sanitizing their hands regularly, discrete coughing and sneezing, and maintaining overall good health and a strong immune system. UNCF Social Entrepreneurship Roadshow
Students are invited to attend the UNCF Roadshow for Social Entrepreneurship TUESDAY (Nov. 10) at 6:00 p.m. in the University Center, Room 117. Social entrepreneurship is the employment of business principles to address a social mission or problem. Here’s a chance to learn about this rapidly growing field and how it might affect your future plans and business aspirations. Get info on how to apply for paid business internships in education-based social entrepreneurship, and up to $10,000 in post-Graduation financial assistance! Refreshments will be provided.
Tribute to Wizard of Jazz
One of the most revered, influential and accomplished musicians in jazz will be remembered in a concert/discussion “A Portrait of Sidney Bechet: Wizard of Jazz” TUESDAY (Nov. 10) at 7:00 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. CIA Representatives on Campus
Representatives from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) will be on campus TUESDAY (Nov. 10) to visit with students interested in exploring careers in federal intelligence work. ACT Brown Bag

Norman C. Francis Scholarship Benefit
XU alumnus Wanda Rouzan ‘69 & A Taste of New Orleans, Irvin Mayfield and Purple Disrespect, along with popular D.J. Captain Charles, will perform at a benefit concert in the University Center’s McCaffery Ballroom Nov. 20 at 9:00 p.m. The proceeds from the concert will benefit the Dr. Norman C. Francis Scholarship at Xavier, established last year as part of the celebration of Francis’ 40th year as XU president. Tickets for the event are $35 and $50. Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program
The Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program is accepting applications from rising juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. The program features campus visitations, seminars, paid summer research opportunities (at least $2,800 stipend) and much more. Student Survey: How is Xavier serving YOU?
Students! Please tell the University what departments or offices you feel are doing a good job and which ones need to be improved and we will give you a chance to win iTunes gift certificates. Check your XU email account for the subject line, “How are we doing at Xavier?” and take a brief survey about campus departments. Three iTunes gift certificates (valued at $150, $100, and $50) will be awarded randomly to individuals who completethis survey. If half of all XU students complete the survey the prize amounts will be doubled, so encourage your classmates to participate.
Herald Extends Advertising Specials
The final, 20-page, all-color edition of the Xavier Herald will be out Nov. 16. This issue will cover events through the end of the semester. Because of overwhelming response to special advertising rates for the XU community, the deadline to reserve space has been extended to MONDAY (Nov. 9) at 5:00 p.m. Ad rates also have changed: full-page, black/white or color, $150; half-page, b/w or color, $75; quarter-page, b/w or color, $50. Cox Sports Television is currently looking for college interns who are interested in any of the following areas: broadcasting and television production - studio and field work with an interest in sports, sports writing and reporting for television and the internet, sports management, video editing, television graphic design and sports marketing and promotions. Frankenstein Comes to Xavier
Everyone knows the story of Frankenstein. Or do they? The tale of the ambitious scientist and the monster he creates in his lab is now nearly two hundred years old. A traveling exhibition "Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature" coming to the Library Resource Center Nov. 18 offers a fresh look at Mary Shelley's book and its importance in discussion about social responsibility and ethical scientific research. The Center for Intercultural and International Programs invites the XU community to participate in International Week at Xavier, a week-long celebration of world culture and cuisine MONDAY-FRIDAY (Nov. 2-6). GCAC Cross Country Championships
The XU men’s and women’s cross country teams will be looking to win their fourth consecutive conference titles this SATURDAY (Nov.7) when they host the GCAC Cross Country Championships at Choctaw Trails Course in Clinton MS. The women’s 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) race gets underway at 8:00 a.m., followed by the men’s 8,000 meter (4.97 mile) start at 8:30 a.m.
All Souls Day
All Souls Day is MONDAY (Nov. 2). All are invited to celebrate Mass at 12 noon in the University Chapel, Administration Building, 1st Floor. We will commemorate all of our beloved deceased: co-workers, colleagues, family, friends, alumni, and others. There will be cards available on which to write the names of your special loved ones. Also feel free to email names to Fr. Jeffery Ott at jmott@xula.edu. All those named will be remembered at Masses throughout November.
Entertainment Workshop
The Office of Career Services and the Office of Student Activities will sponsor a workshop on careers in the entertainment industry THURSDAY (Nov. 5) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. The workshop is part of a national campaign to assist participating institutions in the promotion of entertainment industry careers. The format will consist of panel discussions along with performances by several artists. Admission is $2 with an XU student I.D. The sophomore class presents "Nightmare on Drexel Drive" MONDAY-FRIDAY (Oct. 26-30). Concert Choir Performs Magnificat
The XU Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. John Ware ’77, has scheduled two performances of the Magnificat this fall: Nov. 1 at Trinity Episcopal Church (5:00 p.m.) and again Nov. 2 in the Xavier University Music Recital Hall (7:30 p.m.). The Office of Technology Administration has been working closely with University & Media Relations to create a new look for the XULA home page that is not only more attractive visually but that also provides web visitors with improved access to wherever they are trying to navigate. Wellness Awareness Week
The Counseling & Wellness Center kicks off its 20th annual Wellness Awareness Week MONDAY (Oct. 19) at 12:30 p.m. on the University Center Terrace. The opening ceremony will honor Dr. Marie DeLarge. The five-day event offers a wide range of campus exercise classes, health screenings, exhibits and other activities. Over 14 million children are growing up in poverty in the U.S. and their life prospects are greatly limited by their lack of equal opportunity. More than 7,300 Teach For America (TFA) corps members are teaching across the country while another 17,000 TFA alumni continue to push for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity. Writing Effective E-mails Workshop
Human Resources invites Faculty and Staff to attend a "Writing Effective E-mails and The Legal Aspects of E-mails” workshop THURSDAY (Oct. 22) at 2:00 p.m. in the Library Resource Center, Room 417B. The workshop will help you write more effective e-mails and discuss the appropriate use of e-mail communications. Classical Spanish Guitarist Recital

The History Department will hold its Fall induction ceremony for Phi Alpha Theta, an international history honors society, on Nov. 12 at 5:00 p.m. in the University Center, Room 205C. The women's basketball team will host a "Rock With You Party" SATURDAY (Oct. 17) at 6 p.m. in The Barn. The party will include introduction of the 2009-10 Gold Nuggets team, a Michael Jackson-themed dance-off among XU residence halls with prizes and a 3-point shooting contest involving students and members of the team. Admission is $3 with a valid XU identification card and $5 for everyone else.

Domestic Exchange Program
Applications are available for students interested in spending the spring 2010 semester at Wheelock College in Boston, MA. Students have the opportunity to continue to earn college credit in their academic major and pay only Xavier’s tuition and room/board. Applicants must currently have a 2.75 GPA; seniors, juniors and sophomores with more than 30 credit hours are welcome to apply. Check with your chair or your advisor before applying. There is a $25 fee for anyone else. Many physician offices are out of the vaccine, so this is an opportunity for those interested. Founder’s Day Convocation
The annual Founder's Day Convocation will be held TUESDAY (Oct. 6) at 12:15 p.m. in the University Gymnasium. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend. Seniors will receive their caps and gowns at the convocation, and special recognition will be given to faculty and staff celebrating specified employment anniversaries.
UNCF 5K Run/Walk
It’s still not too late to sign up for the United Negro College Fund Annual 5K Run/Walk, Students, faculty and staff may sign up outside of the University Center between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. THURSDAY-FRIDAY (Oct. 8-9). The fee is only $5 for XU students and $25 for everyone else – both include a tee shirt and complimentary Audubon Zoo coupons. This year’s Run/Walk is scheduled for SUNDAY (Oct. 11) at Audubon Park. Previous recommendations about hand hygiene, avoiding crowded areas, social distancing are still strongly encouraged. Memorial Mass
The Office of Campus Ministry will conduct a Memorial Mass THURSDAY (Oct. 8) at noon in the University Chapel in order to remember those relatives of XU community members who died since our last Memorial Mass (Sept. 3).

The College of Pharmacy will host its fall 2009 Career Fair on TUESDAY (Oct. 6) [informational] and WEDNESDAY (Oct. 7) [scheduled interviews]. In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Student Health Services will sponsor Health and Fun Day FRIDAY (Oct. 9). The Susan G. Komen breast cancer trailer will be on campus from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. [on Broadway St. between Dixon and Drexel] offering an interactive learning center, information on the breast cancer movement and breast health awareness, inspirational videos, and tips for supporting love ones facing breast cancer. Business Achievers Meeting
There will be a meeting of the Business Achievers Association THURSDAY (Oct. 8) at 12:15 p.m. in the University Center, Room 205C. BET Black College Tour Audition
FRIDAY (Oct. 9) is the deadline for students to send in a video submission to audition for the BET Black College Tour commercial at XU. Footage must contain: 1. a personal introduction, 2. a read welcoming the BET Black College Tour to campus combined with a unique campus fact, 3. a personal note about what makes you special, 4. some closing words, 5. (optional) a quick interview with someone interesting on the campus, and 6. personal contact info. Submitters should pay special attention to their appearance, diction, energy, and camera presence. Entries will not be judging production quality or editing. The goal is to get a feel for each person's potential. Luard Scholarship Competition
The English-Speaking Union of the United States announces the opening of its 2010-2011 Luard scholarship competition. The scholarship, which enables a student attending a UNCF school (i.e. Xavier) to spend his/her Junior year at a British university, covers round trip transportation, tuition, room & board, books and necessary expenses for the academic year. [What is the eBulletin? How do I get my news included?]
The weekly eBulletin has been designated by the University Administration as the official vehicle for communicating non-urgent announcements and information to XU faculty, staff and students. It is usually distributed early Friday afternoon, covering the upcoming week (Monday-Sunday). If you have an announcement or information about a campus event that you wish to submit for inclusion in the eBulletin, please send it to xunews@xula.edu. Deadline for submissions is 10:00 a.m. Friday.
