LIBRARY RESOURCE CENTER - Welcome
seporator
Robert Skinner University Librarian

WELCOME to the Library Resource Center web page. As we’ve geared up for the 2007-2008 academic year, we’ve added a number of new digital resources to our collection that we hope you’ll find useful. We now offer full or partial full-text access to more than 19,000 journal titles, and upcoming is access to the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. Through Wiley-Interscience, we now have full-text access to the Wiley Handbook of Current and Emerging Drug Therapies and Handbook of Contemporary Neuropharmacology.

Visitors to the Government Documents Department on the second floor will notice a new bank of compact movable storage in place. This heralds our larger commitment to acquiring Federal publications in all subjects. It also means that we can begin more actively collecting government publications from the State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans. As the region continues to recover from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, history and development will be chronicled in the documents from all governmental entities.

In the University Archives and Special Collections, researchers will discover recent acquisitions dealing with the history of jazz, African-American culture, New Orleans, and Xavier University.

The new Zuckoff music collection features ten-inch and twelve-inch long-play recordings, many of which are rarely encountered. Both white and black jazz musicians are featured, including the legendary Lee Wiley and the great Fats Waller. The collection also includes a smaller group of folk recordings by a wide cross section of artists. The cataloging of these recordings is nearing completion, after which they will be available in the Media Center.

As usual, staff members are available on all four floors of the Library to answer your questions and help you find what you need from our various collections. I’ll take the opportunity to remind you of some milestones from last semester. One is that we now enjoy full wireless access on all four floors of the building for those of you who want to bring your laptops in with you. The other is that recommendations for books, serials, and audiovisual materials can be made through our online book request form found at http://www.xula.edu/library/forms/bookorder.php

If you’re among the new faculty members who joined us this year, be sure to visit, introduce yourselves, and let us know how we can serve you in your teaching and research efforts.

Sincerely,
