USA CATHOLIC CHARITIES GRANT FOR HURRICANE SURVIVORS

This grant will support an effort that ties Catholic studies with the process of healing the psychological and physical effects of Hurricane Katrina (and Rita) for a number of students ( clergy, religious and laity) from the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Gulf Port Region. Students will be offered transportation and/or tuition scholarships to participate in the summer programs of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies. The students, who work primarily in Black Catholic parishes and services in the Greater New Orleans, have been struggling like others with the loss of jobs, homes and household belonging, families, friends and churches. Participation in three weeks of study in the pastoral theology degree and C and E programs (catechetical formation, youth ministry, ministerial leadership) enhanced by our psychological and spiritual formation programs will empower them to return to New Orleans and the Gulf Region with a renewed spirit and able to sustain themselves and support others who are struggling with the effects of the Hurricane and dealing with the fear of future catastrophes."
