Admissions Information
Freshman: An applicant for the freshman class must submit an official transcript of his or her secondary work (or results from the General Education Diploma (GED) in lieu of the high school transcript).
By high school graduation, the student should have completed 16 academic units which include 4 years of English, 1 year of algebra, 1 year of geometry recommended, 1 year of national science, and 1 year of social science. The additional eight units may be distributed over mathematics, social science, natural science, language , or literature. If a student has not had the prerequisite algebra before entrance, he or she must remove the deficiency before being permitted to register for any college mathematics classes. The University provides a special course to satisfy the deficiency in algebra.
The 3 major criteria reviewed by the Admissions Committee are as
follows:
- High School Transcript
- ACT or SAT Scores
- High School Counselor’s Recommendation
Generally speaking, the University seeks well-rounded students with a potential for educational and personal development. Admission slots are limited and are offered on a competitive basis.
Notification of decision will be sent by April 15th. Early action decisions are possible for qualified students. Applications received after the deadline will be considered provided that there are slots available in the incoming class.
Transfer: A prospective transfer applicant must present an official copy of his or her transcript from each college-level institution attended. Transfer applicants with less than 20 hours of college credit must also present secondary school records and standardized test results (ACT or SAT). Student Life
Xavier offers opportunities to grow as an individuals and as students. In providing these opportunities, students will develop broad competencies needed for personal growth and development, interpersonal development, leadership and service development, environmental and cultural development, and understanding and commitment to social justice. The University offers a variety of service, professional and social organizations which include the major historically Black fraternities and sororities. On an intercollegiate level, Xavier has teams in basketball, tennis, and cross-country. A wide array of recreational and intramural activities are available for all students, including cheerleading squad, dance teams and coral & instrumental musical groups.
Credit by Examination
College credit under the Advanced Placement Program of the College Board is offered to entering freshmen of superior ability. A minimum grade of 3 in the subject-area is required in order for credit to be granted. Credit may also be earned in certain subject matter areas on the basis of the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) subject examinations only. A maximum of 30 semester hours of credit will be accepted towards the degree.
Placement Tests
To help determine which college courses they should be placed in, all entering freshmen whose ACT and SAT scores indicate that further testing is warranted should take the placement tests in the recommended areas. Also, transfer students with less than 60 semester hours or whose academic program at Xavier still requires courses in Mathematics or English could be required to take placement tests. Students who do not take the tests in the recommended areas will be required to take developmental courses in those areas. Failure of placement test in any area invalidates transfer credit in that area. Students are encouraged to register for the ACT or SAT early in the high school senior year.
